UVA RESEARCH QUERY GOES TO FEDERAL COURT

Police broke up a protest by a group claiming biological warfare research is being conducted at the University of Virginia, and the dispute moved to federal court.

The university chapter of Earth First, a national environmental group, filed a Freedom of Information claim Wednesday to determine if the school's denial of the allegation is true.

Ten members of the group unfurled a banner on a campus walkway Wednesday. The banner said, "Welcome to UVa, Biological Warfare Research Center: We do Genocide. UVa wants you dead. Trash the Pentagon. Not the Planet. Earth First!"

Officials of the Washington-based Foundation on Economic Trends say the U.S. Department of Defense last November listed UVa among 120 institutions nationwide participating in the Biological Defense Research Program.

School officials said no weapons research was done at the university, and that the research on enzymes that cause disease ended more than two years ago.
