SUMMERLIN SETS STATE MARK AT NATIONALS

Dan Summerlin became the first Virginia swimmer to finish the 400-meter individual medley in under 4 minutes, winning the event Thursday at the YMCA national swimming meet.

The Roanoke Gators remained in third place after two days of competition. Alexandria, Va., led the meet with 461 points, followed by Wilton, Conn., (366) and the Gators (328).

Summerlin's time of 3 minutes, 59.7 seconds set a state record. He also was part of a state record in the 400 freestyle relay. Summerlin teamed with Chan Ferguson, Billy Young and Matt Senfield to finish third in 3:07.11.

Senfield finished eighth in the 200 backstroke and Young was 10th.

Meredith Hale paced the Gators' women team with a fifth-place finish in the 200 backstroke and joined with Ashley Roe, Shannon Goff and Lane Seawell to finish 14th in the 400 freestyle relay.
