The younger Knight, a 6-foot-6 forward, averaged 14 points and six assists in his one year as a post-graduate at the New Hampton School, playing against other New England prep schools and junior varsity teams.
"I think he was wide open when he came here. He wanted to see how much he could develop and where he'd be in a year," said his coach, Whit Lesure. "If we didn't think he could play there, and Bobby didn't think so, he wouldn't be going there."
"His dad is not in the business of giving handouts to kids," Lesure said, noting that Patrick will get a basketball scholarship.
Lesure said Patrick won't be able to "step right in" and play, but has a future with the Hoosiers. He said he sees Patrick as a swing player, playing small forward and guard.
Lesure said young Knight came to New Hampton to mature physically and to improve his basketball skills. He said Patrick is a good passer and has good offensive skills, and can play defense after watching him help the team to an 18-7 record
He said "there's not a lot Pat will see next year that will surprise him" after playing under New Hampton Assistant Coach Mark Tilton, a former football coach who works his players very hard.
