SLAEM WINS NO-HITTER

Salem's Chris Morris liked the mound. The Spartans liked William Fleming's pitching. The Colonels liked none of it.

Morris tossed a no-hitter and the Spartans banged out 13 hits as Salem mauled Fleming 12-1 Thursday at Maher Field in a non-district baseball game that was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Of the many story lines Salem (2-4) had going, left-hander Morris' was the most riveting. After issuing two of his three walks in the first inning, he settled down to strike out 10. Until David Nimmo walked and scored from second on an error in the fifth, no Colonel advanced beyond first base.

"I started coming off the mound better and everything started to feel good," Morris said. "The last two times I pitched [at Blacksburg and Christiansburg], the mound was so high I felt like I was going to fall off it. Here, I could just stretch out, like at home."

Morris improved his record to 2-1 with relative ease. He struck out the side in the second. Only one ball left the infield during the course of a warm and breezy afternoon.

Fleming's record fell to 0-5.

Salem scored five runs in the third to chase Nimmo (0-2) and followed that with seven runs in the fourth. Eight of the Spartans' nine starters hit safely. Greg Smith and Chad Wheeling, the fourth and fifth batters in the lineup, combined for four hits (two doubles), four runs batted in and four runs scored.

"That's the first time we've hit in five games," said John Hinkle, Salem's coach.

In other baseball:

Jason Beheler, Mark Shaver and Aaron Lange combined to drive in 11 runs as North Cross outslugged Roanoke Valley Christian 16-8 in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Beheler hit a two-run homer, Shaver was 4-for-4 with two doubles and Lange had four RBI on two hits. North Cross improved its VIC record to 1-0 and RVC dropped to 0-2.

Mike Hurt hit a triple and two singles, driving in two runs and stealing three bases for RVC (0-2). Scott Hurt, no relation, added two doubles and two RBI and Chris Taylor was 3-for-4 with three doubles.

At Bedford, Liberty scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Brookville 6-5 in a Seminole District showdown.

The Minutemen (5-0-2, 5-0-2) started the rally with a double by winning pitcher Kirk Fisher (2-0). He took third on an error and scored on a single by Chad Parker.

Kerry Hogan and Mike Jarrell each went 2-for-3 and Jarrell knocked in two runs for Liberty. Brookville is 6-1.

At Buchanan, Randy Waltis hit a two-run homer and Parry McCluer rolled to an easy 11-1 victory over James River.

At Forest, a three-run homer in top of the seventh inning was the difference as Buckingham defeated Jefferson Forest 7-5 in the Seminole District.

Danny Freeman (0-2) was the hard-luck pitcher for the Cavaliers, holding Buckingham to six hits.

At Lynchburg, Matt Reynolds and Kevin Adams each had three hits, but it wasn't enough as William Byrd was beaten 6-4 by E.C. Glass in non-district play.

Reynolds drove in two runs for the Terriers (4-1), who fell behind 6-2 in the second inning and never recovered. E.C. Glass is 1-2.

\ SOCCER: Mike Nuckols scored his first varsity goal as North Cross rolled past Miller School 6-0. Joe Basile added two goals for the Raiders, and Dustin Fonder contributed a goal and two assists.

At Daleville, Chad Brown scored two goals and set up the other as Northside blanked Lord Botetourt 3-0 in a Blue Ridge District game.

John Baughan made seven saves en route to the shutout for the Vikings (1-0, 4-0). Lord Botetourt is 0-1, 2-2.

At Patrick Henry, Wes Burrow scored four goals to lead the Patriots to a 10-0 victory over Pulaski County. PH improved its record to 3-0, Pulaski County's record fell to 0-2.

\ SOFTBALL: Bobbie Jo Wright pitched a one-hitter to lead Glenvar past Rockbridge 9-2. Wright fanned 11 as the Highlanders improved their record to 4-1. Rockbridge's record fell to 1-3.

Shelley Bowles tossed a no-hitter, struck out 11 and extended her streak of innings without allowing an earned run to 26 as Franklin County beat George Washington of Danville 11-1 in a non-district game.

Bowles also had two doubles and drove in three runs as the Eagles (4-0) used all 18 players. GW-Danville's record fell to 0-4.

Summer Clayton drove in two runs to lead Patrick Henry past visiting Heritage in a non-district game.

Kathy King (1-1) picked up the victory for the Patriots (2-3). Heritage is 1-2.

At New Castle, Craig County committed 16 errors and dropped a game to James River 28-8.
