JMU GIVES PURZYCKI CONTRACT EXTENSION

James Madison has extended football coach Joe Purzycki's contract through the 1991 season, school spokesman Gary Michael said Thursday.

Purzycki's contract would have expired after the 1990 season. Details of the one-year extension were not disclosed.

Purzycki, 43, has compiled a 29-24-2 record in five years at James Madison. His best season was 1987, when the Dukes had a 9-2 regular season record and made their first appearance in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

The Dukes have 46 lettermen returning in the fall after going 5-4-1.

Before coming to Harrisonburg in 1985, Purzycki compiled a 21-21-1 record in four years at Delaware State.
