DRIVERS ARE STILL ENJOYING PCS

The new may have worn off of Pulaski County Speedway; driver interest has not.

More than 250 drivers have registered to race at the ]-mile paved oval this year. They get their first crack at the winner's trophy Saturday night when PCS opens its third season with the Ropho Sales-WRAD-WRIQ 200.

There has been little obvious change at the track since last year. However, promoter Steve McMurray has overseen some upgrading. Once, a near-sighted person might have had trouble seeing the 3-foot tall sign at the speedway entrance. This year no one should have trouble finding the 30-foot billboard at the gate on U.S. 11.

PCS also has resurfaced the track in both turns. According to McMurray, the Busch Grand National race last summer tore up some of the surface and thus made necessary the work.

There are changes in this year's schedule.

Gone are the All-Pro and All-America Challenge series. A new series will make its debut at PCS - the USAC Sprint Car series. NASCAR driver Bill Elliott is also scheduled April 28 April 28.for his first trip to the Dublin track.

As for other Winston Cup stars, Harry Gant and Ken Schrader again will make appearances.

McMurray said there would be other similarities to this past season.

"We have all the drivers that have registered in the past years back and we feel the racing will be as exciting as ever," McMurray said. "We have the big names of Winston Cup coming to the track and we'll have the Busch Grand National back again this year."

The Busch race will be the final Saturday in July. Unlike 1989, the GN race will be a one-day affair instead of two.

The SMART modifieds will return this year in addition to three double-points races and the Pulaski-Martinsville Challenge.

Another challenge race is the Tri-County-Pulaski-Lonesome Pine Challenge.

The Tri-County track, located in Hudson, N.C., races on Friday and the Lonesome Pine track in Coeburn, which is being promoted by McMurray, is racing on Sunday. Any driver who wins two of the three races will receive a $1,000 bonus and a driver sweeping all three will pocket $5,000.\ April
