NOTHING NEW FROM ELLEN GOODMAN

AT ONE POINT in Ellen Goodman's recent lecture at Roanoke College, she asked the audience rhetorically, "Does it surprise you how familiar this sounds?" I was indeed surprised to recognize Goodman's lecture as one I heard her give in Santa Barbara, Calif., five or six years ago.

Does Goodman think that Southwest Virginia is that far behind the times? Perhaps instead she is, for it is ironic that, as the keynote speaker for a conference entitled "Working for Change," she could come up with nothing new.\ ELIZABETH KEYSER\ ROANOKE
