Walsh believes he must reach a final assessment on Reagan's role in the biggest scandal of his presidency because it is a crucial element of a final report he is required to submit both to the special court that appointed him and to Congress, sources said.
With his more than three-year inquiry heading into its final stages, Walsh is pursuing what one source called several "loose ends," and his sweeping victory in the Poindexter case has provided a new impetus to the investigation.
Dan Webb, the chief Poindexter prosecutor, said after the verdict that the Poindexter case exposed "a course of misconduct that had to be prosecuted in open court so the public understood what happened in connection with the Iran-Contra affair."
