I-95 SHOOTING VICTIM CONTINUES TO RECOVER

Police say they have few clues about the identity of the person who fired at Hartfield, a 23-year-old Hampton University student, on March 4, as he and his fiance were driving south on the interstate in Richmond.

Hartfield was in a coma for 13 days after the shooting and underwent surgery twice to remove bullet fragments and a blood clot that developed in his brain.

Doctors had feared Hartfield might have lost control of his right side, but when he awoke he was able to wiggle all his toes and move both arms.

Nathan Zasler, a physician at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, where Hartfield is still a patient, said Hartfield's injury was one from which many would not have recovered. Hartfield has trouble speaking, and Zasler would not say what the prospects are for a full recovery.

"Considering how well he has done to date, I think he will continue to do well," said Zasler.
