The victims were identified as Joseph Rastatter, 58, and his wife Mabel, 54, of Woodbridge and the man's mother, Esther Rastatter, 84, of Erie, Pa.
Fairfax County Police spokesman Peter Fakoury said Juan Landeros, 26, of Alexandria, was traveling south on U.S. 1 after leaving the scene of an unrelated accident when he crossed the center line and collided with a van.
Landeros' car then collided with the Rastatters' car and pushed it more than 70 feet along a guardrail.
The two women were pronounced dead at the scene while Rastatter was taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Fakoury said Landeros was taken to Mount Vernon Hospital, where he was treated for a broken ankle and a shoulder injury. He said the driver of the van was not injured.
U.S. 1 was closed in both directions for nearly three hours following the collision.
