AKERS, LURA K.\ Lura Knowles Akers of Roanoke died Sunday, April 8, 1990. Mrs. Akers was a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church; a member of the Thomas Meeker Sunday School class; a past president of the United Methodist Womens Organization; a past president of the P.T.A.; and was secretary-treasurer of the Daleth Study Club of Roanoke for several years. Lura was the Virginia State Secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary for 36 years. At her retirement from this position, she was honored with a testimonial dinner and made an Honorary Department President, the only time this honor has been conferred. She was a member of the the Roanoke Auxiliary Unit No. 3; a deputy representative of the Veterans Medical Center in Salem; and a volunteer for many years. Lura was Secretary of the Girls State Board of Virginia for 36 years, taking part in full activities each year. Lura was born in Christiansburg, the daughter of the late Joshua Thomas and Henrietta Slusher Knowles. She was the widow of Frank Brown Akers and was preceded in death by her children, Frank Brown Akers, Jr., Lewis Daniel Akers, and Elizabeth Akers. Surviving are her daughters-in-law, Kathryn Brown Akers, Fairview Park, Ohio; Birdie Akers Bassett, Bassett; also nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m., April 11, with the Rev. Walter M. Lockett, Jr. and the Rev. Lance Knowles officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg, Va. with a graveside service at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to The American Legion Auxiliary Building Fund, 1805 Chantilly Street, Richmond, Va., 23230 or the Capital Improvement Fund at Greene Memorial Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 at Oakey's South Chapel.
