NORTH CROSS SURVIVES PLAYER LOSSES TO WIN

North Cross lost in attrition but won in soccer on Monday.

The Raiders finished the game without four key players - one lost to injury and three ejected for fighting - while Martinsville had two players tossed out for fighting. But North Cross survived the visiting Bulldogs' second-half pressure and won 4-2.

"I was concerned," said Richard Cook, the Raiders' coach. "They had about 17 minutes when we lost [our players]. From that point on, even though they were going long ball, they were causing problems."

Senior sweeper Scott Austin and senior halfback Dustin Fonder, two of the team's top players, were ejected along with Martinsville's Heath Minnear for a scuffle that began after North Cross goalie Jim Dixon smothered Minnear's penalty kick early in the second half.

Trailing 4-0, Martinsville (3-2) scored twice in a span of seven minutes to cut the lead in half with nine minutes remaining.

Shortly after that, Raiders forward Joe Basile, who had two goals, was tossed for trading punches with another Bulldog, also ejected.

North Cross (5-0) built a 3-0 lead in the first half. Fonder scored nine minutes into the game and, 20 minutes later, Basile got his first goal after nifty ball-handling sprung him free in front of the goal. Three minutes after that, Basile took a pass from Andy McDonald and scored again. Eleven minutes into the second half, freshman John Logan scored on a header to give North Cross the 4-0 lead.
