TEEN FACES CHARGE OF INTENT TO RAPE

A 19-year-old man has been charged with breaking into a Southwest Roanoke home with intent to commit rape.

Alvin Maurice Fletcher, 19, of the 700 block of Hunt Avenue Northwest, was arrested near a home in the 400 block of Willow Oak Drive.

Authorities received a report that someone was trying to break into the home at 1:18 a.m. Sunday, police said. The caller told police he had heard breaking glass.

A police officer who responded saw a man in the basement wearing a white cloth draped over his head.

The man, who apparently had entered through a broken basement window, fled and was caught a short distance away in a wooded area, police said.

The man, who gave several false names to police, was carrying two butcher knives, authorities said. No one in the home was confronted.
