PIANIST WINS YOUTH SYMPHONY COMPETITION

Steven Woodell of Roanoke placed first in the 1990 Roanoke Youth Symphony Young Artists Awards competition.

He received a prize of $200 for his performance of Brahms' Piano Rhapsodie in G Minor.

The second-place award of $100 went to Michael Doherty of Roanoke. He played Charles De Beriot's Violin Concerto in D Major, with Chris Rushbrooke as accompanist. Third prize went to Blacksburg's Robin Meyers, who performed Haydn's Violin Concerto in C Major with Twila Wallace as accompanist.

The annual awards competition, which is underwritten anonymously, took place Sunday in Olin Hall.

Judges were Allen Bachelder, Linda Plaut and John Husser, all of whom teach at Virginia Tech and are members of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra.
