The first notices, mailed this week, went to Elliston. Other mailings, at roughly two-week intervals, will go to rural addresses in Shawsville, Riner, Pilot, Catawba, McCoy, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Radford. The addresses are immediately effective, but the Postal Service will honor old addresses for a year.
The system will help emergency vehicles better respond to calls. County's planning director Joe Powers said state route signs will remain on roads after street signs go up.
Residents will be required to display house numbers at least 4 inches tall. They must be on the house or another location readily visible from the street. Powers said mailboxes and newspaper boxes are suitable sites if they are on the same side of the road as the house.
Interim maps with new street names are being printed and will be ready soon. They can be purchased for 50 cents at the planning department in the Montgomery County Courthouse. Powers said the county would mail maps for 75 cents.
Questions or corrections can be addressed to the planning department at 382-5750. The department also will answer questions at Elliston's post office, 3-6 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.
