FLOYD SCHOOL BOARD ADOPTS NEW COURSES, PART OF CALENDAR

Floyd County's School Board had an eye on the future Monday as it added to the high school curriculum and approved part of next year's school calendar.

Six academic subjects will be added. Two are one-semester social studies courses to increase student awareness - "Current Issues" and "20th-Century History." Public speaking will be a one-semester English course for eighth- and ninth-graders. "Latin I" will be offered via the electric classroom.

"Physical Fitness" replaces an existing junior-senior elective. A cooperative education class will be started special education students.

Four vocational courses were added. "Living for Success" will teach family management to disabled students. "Graphics Communications" is the second-year course in graphics technology. And there will be one-semester courses in business law and note-taking.

The board adopted the student portion of the 1990-91 schedule. Classes begin Aug. 24, 1990, and end May 28, 1991. Board Chairman Dale Profitt said teacher workdays and the make-up policy are being revised to meet state requirements.

The board instructed elementary supervisor Tony Oliveira to work with principals and librarians to improve elementary library access.

After its meeting, the board met representatives from the support organizations at Floyd County High. Profitt and board member Doug Phillips stressed the need to increase parental involvement there and willingness to re-start the PTA.

The board plans an extra meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. to deal with a student disciplinary matter.
