MONTGOMERY SUPERVISORS OK SHAWSVILLE SCHOOL MODULAR UNIT

Montgomery County supervisors have approved $30,000 to fund a modular unit to relieve overcrowding at Shawsville Elementary School. The unit, the second at the school, will include a restroom and water fountain. The board approved it 7-0 with little discussion Monday night.

In other business, the board:

Approved a special-use permit for medical offices adjacent to Montgomery Regional Hospital.

The supervisors asked that the developer contact the county Public Service Authority to facilitate wastewater treatment service before building permits are issued. The county is studying plans to develop sewage service in the Blacksburg-Christiansburg U.S. 460 corridor.

Accepted a bid from Thomas Built Buses Inc. of $102,375 for a new bookmobile. The bookmobile, to be delivered in about eight months, will carry 3,000 books. The county's current unit is about 20 years old and breaks down frequently, supervisors said.

Approved $3,000 for the Montgomery County Historical Festival. Supervisors James Moore, Joe Stewart and Ann Hess dissented in the 4-3 vote.

Asked for bids from private haulers on curbside trash collection. The county will study door-to-door pickup in the Mount Tabor and Lusters Gate areas for one year.
