BOUCHER HOSTS FREE MEETING ON VOLUNTEERING

A free conference to provide tips on obtaining grants and other helpful information for non-profit agencies in Southwest Virginia, ranging from arts groups to rescue squads, will be held April 20 at the Southwest Virginia 4-H Center east of here.

It will be hosted by Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, starting at 9:30 a.m. with several general speakers during the morning and a variety of special-interest workshops in the afternoon.

"Communities in Southwest Virginia are dependent on non-profit organizations for basic services and for cultural enrichment," Boucher said. "We are indebted to a large host of volunteers who provide fire protection to our homes, rescue assistance to accident victims and repair services to low-income persons. Concerned citizens have also established arts programs, renovated historic properties and created museums."

The conference also will give these volunteers from throughout the region a chance to meet one another and exchange ideas. The afternoon workshops will include information on grant-writing, establishing community-based child care programs, and getting funding for museums, arts programs, housing groups, fire departments, rescue squads and historic preservation alliances.

Further information and registrations are available from Donna Graham at Boucher's Abingdon office, telephone 628-1145.
