FORMER HUSBAND CHARGED WITH BEATING WOMAN

A Northwest Roanoke woman was in critical condition this morning at Roanoke Memorial Hospital where she was admitted after she was severely beaten by her ex-husband, police said.

The former husband is being held on charges of attempted murder.

At about 12:55 a.m., a man kicked out the door glass of the home of Angela O. Hickman, 32, on the 900 block of Hanover Avenue Northwest, police said.

Once inside, the man forced his way through a bedroom door and attacked Hickman as she lay in bed, police said.

A woman who witnessed the attack said the man severely beat Hickman and began to kick and stomp her.

When police arrived, Hickman was bleeding from the face and having difficulty breathing. She was listed in critical condition today at the hospital.

The assailant fled the scene, but was found several hours later on the 500 block of Harrison Avenue. The man, who was wearing a blood-stained sweatshirt, gave several false names to police but was recognized and arrested, police said.

Ricky Anthony Hickman, 33, of the 1700 block of Downing Street Northwest, was charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit murder and attempted murder.
