HOOKER, A. FRANK, SR.

A. Frank Hooker, Sr., 85, of 1006 Mulberry Road, Martinsville, died Wednesday morning at his residence. He was born in Patrick County, Va. on May 30, 1904 to the late Samuel Hairston Hooker and the late Nancy Lucinda Agee Hooker. Mr. Hooker attended local schools and The College of William and Mary. In April 1924, Mr. Hooker was one of the founder's of Hooker-Bassett Furniture Co., which today is called Hooker Furniture Corporation. Over the years Mr. Hooker served in many capacities. He was made Chairman of the Board in 1968 and upon his official retirement in 1986 was made Chairman of the Board of Emeritus. Mr. Hooker was an avid sportsman. He served as President of the Martinsville Athletic's Baseball team in the late 1940's and early '50's. During his lifetime Mr. Hooker received numerous citations for his services rendered to various athletic endeavors. He was a member of Chatmoss Country Club, Martinsville, Va., The Everglades Club, Palm Beach, Fla., and the Beach Club, Palm Beach, Fla. Mr. Hooker was a member of the First Baptist Church of Martinsville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Madge Field Hooker on June 8, 1988. He is survived by a daughter, Peggy Hooker Edwards of Martinsville; two sons, A. Frank Hooker, Jr. of Martinsville, and John E. Hooker of Danville, Calif.;a brother, Ralph A. Hooker of Martinsville; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday at the First Baptist Church of Martinsville with Dr. James E. Baucom officiating. Entombent will follow in Roselawn Abbey Mausoleum, Martinsville, Va. The body will be placed in the home at 1006 Mulberry Rd., Martinsville on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to The First Baptist Church, 23 Starling Ave., Martinsville, Va. 24112 or to the charity of one's choice. McKee Funeral Services is in charge of the arrangements.
