DYSON NETS 4 GOALS IN ROANOKE VICTORY

After spending four years as the Roanoke College lacrosse team's faceoff specialist, which is like serving on an auto-racing pit crew, Dave Dyson finally has gotten a chance to drive the car.

That's not to say he still doesn't change a few tires.

Dyson, who continues to take nearly every faceoff for the Maroons, added to his team-high goals total when he scored four times Wednesday in the Maroons' 15-7 victory over Lynchburg College.

"I always thought I had the ability to score," said Dyson, who has 28 goals for the season. "We just kept it a secret for a while."

Dyson, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound senior from Seekonk, Mass., entered the 1990 season with a total of seven career goals. That's not surprising, considering he rarely had a chance to play in scoring situations.

"My sophomore year, I took every faceoff," Dyson said. "I'd face off, get the ball and immediately come off the field. A lot of people have asked, `Wouldn't you like to have it to do over?' But I like the way it's turned out."

Dyson also has 12 assists and is tied for the team lead with 40 points. Senior attackman Will Goldthwait has 24 goals and 16 assists, including three of each against the Hornets.

Roanoke coach Bill Pilat, in his second year as head coach after one year as an assistant, said he isn't sure Dyson's offensive skills had developed by his sophomore year.

"He probably should have played more last year," Pilat said. "He came to me [after the season] and said he wanted to do faceoffs, play in man-up situations and be our leading scorer. I said, `You'd better be in great shape.' "

Dyson lost 20 pounds and worked on shooting with his brother, Jeff, a midfielder for Johns Hopkins.

"I didn't think I'd score four and five goals a game," Dyson said. "It's been a nice surprise. Also, I think it's helped my faceoffs."

Dyson, who took 21 of 24 faceoffs Wednesday, has a 67.5 winning percentage for the season.

Roanoke's victory Wednesday was its sixth in a row and gave the Maroons a 4-0 record in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and a 7-3 overall mark. On Saturday, Roanoke visits Hampden-Sydney, which last year handed the Maroons their first loss in regular-season ODAC competition, 6-5.
