HELLO . . . ALBANIA? AT&T'S ON THE LINE

The American Telegraph & Telephone Co. said Wednesday it will begin phone service from the United States to Albania next month.

Albania has been one of four major nations without direct telephone service with the United States.

AT&T also has petitioned the Treasury Department to allow formal negotiations with Vietnam, which along with Cambodia and North Korea do not have telephone links with the United States, said AT&T spokesman Herb Linnen.

U.S.-to-Albania calls will be put through with operator assistance starting in May and direct-dial service will begin in the fall, he said. The hard-line communist government began allowing calls from its country on March 24. - Associated Press
