3 JUDGES WITHDRAW FROM ALL-WHITE CLUBS

Two Virginia Beach judges and a Norfolk judge have resigned from all-white country clubs, apparently in response to General Assembly pressure.

Judges J. Davis Reed III and Robert L. Simpson Jr. resigned from the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach and Norfolk judge John E. Clarkson has quit the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.

"The legislature had made their position clear, but each judge has to make his own decision," Reed said. "I did some soul-searching and I made mine."

The terms of Reed, Simpson and Clarkson expire early next year and they must pass a review by the judicial committees of the General Assembly before they are reappointed.
