Five cars have been recovered from the waters of an abandoned rock quarry and police say they are unsure why thieves would steal late-model automobiles, leave them intact and roll them into a quarry.

Virginia State Police on Wednesday pulled two stolen cars from the quarry, a 1986 Pontiac Trans Am stolen in March 1988 in Florida and a 1990 Chevrolet Beretta reported stolen April 3 from a Danville dealership.

Police on Monday recovered a 1991 GMC Jimmy reported stolen last month from another Danville dealership and two motorcycles, a 1983 Yamaha and a 1975 Honda, reported stolen from their owners in Danville.

State Trooper T.A. LaRue said authorities were summoned to the four-acre quarry in western Halifax County after fishermen noticed what appeared to be a petroleum-like substance on the water.

Danville police on Tuesday arrested two people in the theft of the Beretta and charged them with grand larceny. Waverly Kim Hood, 22, was being held Wednesday in the Danville jail and a 16-year-old was being held in the W.W. Moore Detention Home in Danville.
