OBIT--POWELL

Grace Rider Powell, age 83, died in her home on Monday, April 9. She was born in Oriskany, Va., on May 13, 1906, to Frank and Lelia Rider and wed to Donald Powell who preceded her in death. Survivors include her sister, Frances Rider Bryant and husband, John, of Salem; daughter, Gail Ferrell Macner, Utica, N.Y.; and grandsons, Chip, John and Michael Hadity, all of Utica, N.Y. She is also survived by Mr. and Mrs Robert F. Rider, Mr. and Mrs Reid Bolling, all of Roanoke; Mr Gary Bryant, Salem; Mr. William Bryant, Jr., Richmond; Linda Allen, Apple Valley, Calif.; Kay Brown, Colombia, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Agnes Rider, Oceans, W.Va.; Georgia Love, Troutdale; and Mary Rider, Sophia, W.Va. Mrs. Powell attended grade school in Oriskany, Va., and was a graduate of New Castle High School after which she pursued a career in teaching. Upon leaving the field of education, she accepted a position with the Roanoke Times & World News where she remained under their employment until her retirement in 1971. Mrs Powell was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 50 years, serving as chairperson of the Worship Commission, past president and vice-president of the Chapel Class, and was the oldest member of the choir, having sung continuously throughout 50 years at Trinity. She served as vice-presdient for the United Methodist Church Rescur Mission, past president and vice-president of United Methodist Women, and as a representetive for Hermitage Home and Hospital. She was also a member of the Thursday Morning Music Club and sang in their choir, as well as a member of the Carola Choir, a local senior citizens group invited to sing in Roanoke and throughout the state on many occasions. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday from Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Howard R. Peters officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Friends may call at Oakeys Roanoke Chapel where the family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday.
