RELIGION BRIEFS

EASTERN ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS, such as those who attend Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox and St. Ambrose American Orthodox parishes, will celebrate Easter this year with Christians who follow the Latin calendar. The two branches of Christendom, separated administratively for nearly 1,000 years, often have different Easters because of the way of calculating the date of Jesus' resurrection.

At Holy Trinity, the opening Passion of Christ [Maundy Thursday] devotions will begin tonight at 7. Good Friday afternoon liturgy starts at 3 and 7:30 p.m. with Holy Saturday devotions at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and the Resurrection service starting at midnight.

\ HOW GREAT THOU ART, a cantata presented by the Chancel Choir and orchestra, is scheduled Good Friday through Sunday nights at Bonsack Baptist Church, U.S. 220/Virginia 604. Admission is by free ticket available from the church. The Friday performance starts at 7:30 with the others at 7.

\ WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN AMERICA, 2216 Peters Creek Road N.W., will include a tableau based on the Leonardo da Vinci painting, "The Last Supper," for its Good Friday observance starting at 7:30 p.m. Nursery will be provided.

\ GRACE BAPTIST TEMPLE, 1527 Gilford Road N.W., will be the site of an Easter Sunday cantata, "Into His Presence." It will be given by the adult choir starting at 7.

\ THE REV. SEABURN DANIEL, director of missions for the Strawberry Bapist Association, will preach for revival services April 25-29 at Glade Creek Baptist Church at Blue Ridge. A nursery will be available for the 7:30 p.m. worship.

\ THE APPALACHIAN BIBLE COLLEGE touring choir will perform Saturday night at 8 at Shenandoah Baptist Church, 6500 Williamson Road. The Easter festival program marks the 40th anniversary of the training school near Beckley, W.Va. There is no admission charge.

\ AN EASTER CANTATA is scheduled Sunday night at 6 at Valley View Wesleyan Church, 2302 Oakland Blvd. N.W. The music will be performed by the adult choir.

\ RABBI DONALD BERLIN, who served Temple Emanuel Reform congregation from 1965 to 1971, will preach at the April 20 worship at the temple. Berlin now is rabbi of a Baltimore congregation and is a coming as part of the centennial celebration of the temple. Call 342-3378 for more information.

\ AN ECUMENICAL SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE for victims of Hitler's Holocaust is scheduled April 22 at 3 p.m. at the Roanoke Unitarian/Universalist Church, 2015 Grandin Road S.W. The Rev. Alvord M. Beardslee of the Hollins College faculty will be the speaker. Members of the Acting Company will dramatize a reading.
