ROMANIA CANCELS VISIT FROM KING

King Michael, who was forced from his throne by the Communists in 1947, was barred from the country Thursday after the Romanian government withdrew his visa.

In a statement, the government announced it had canceled visas for the exiled king; his wife, Anna; and two daughters after concluding that his visit was not private but political.

"The government has nothing against a private visit," the statement said. "But it cannot agree to a trip of a highly political nature."

The 68-year-old king, who had been scheduled to fly from Switzerland on Thursday, said at a news conference in Zurich that he could not understand the government's concern because the visit was "strictly private." He said he would plan another trip "as soon as possible."
