NEW RIVER PEOPLE

ERIC L. BECKER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel A. Becker of Christiansburg, was named to the faculty's list of honorable mention for the fall term of 1989-90 at Roanoke College. He is a Christiansburg High School graduate.

\ CADET JAMES R. BOWMAN JR. of Radford, a Marion Military Institute college sophomore, will be named in the 1990 edition of Who's Who Among American Junior College Students. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Bowman Sr. and Jeanne Bowman.

\ Z.L. FENG of Radford recently won the Emily Goldsmith Award from the American Watercolor Society for his watercolor portrait painting "Miles to Go." The same painting also won a Liquitex Award from San Diego International Watercolor Exhibition 1989 and was one of nine award-winning paintings selected out of 10,365 entries.

\ LINDA BOSTIC SMITH of Elliston wonthe "People's Choice" award and a first place in oil painting for her painting "The Maize" at an art and writing awards ceremony in April. She also took first place in drawing for her "Harmony of Life" drawing. Smith's work, rooted in Appalachian culture and in the future, has gained national recognition for her portrait of "Gus" from the "Lonesome Dove" television mini-series. She is currently a volunteer at Elliston-Lafayette School and recently participated in Appalachian Awareness Week at New River Community College.

\ CLYDE P. GREER of Fairlawn retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant on April 1 after 38 years of service. He was a lead engineer in the Quality Engineering Department. Greer joined RAAP in 1958 after spending seven years at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. He and his wife Betty have five children: Clyde, a college professor in California; David, an engineer at RAAP; Eileen, a teacher at Dublin Elementary School; and Brian and Daniel, both of Fairlawn.

\ HAROLD V. FISHER of New Castle retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant on April 1 after 33 years of service. He was a foreman in the propellant department. He and his wife Talma have six children: Brenda Van Dyke, Annette Hannah, Dexter Fisher, Vester Fisher and Angela Bye, all of New Castle, and Darlene Fisher, deceased. The Fishers attend Level Green Christian Church in Newport.

\ ROY E. FLYNN of Pulaski retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant on April 1 after 32 years of service. Flynn was a craft helper in the maintenance department. He and his wife Minnie have three children: Rosemary Gillespie of Reston, Roy A. Flynn of Boones Mill, and Michael R. Flynn of Pulaski.

\ LEONARD L. SMITH of Christiansburg retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant on April 1 after 28 years of service. Smith was the process engineering pollution abatement supervisor. He joined RAAP in 1967 after six years at Bacchus Works. He and his wife Shirley have six daughters: Christine Smith of El Paso, Texas, Debbie Rose of Christiansburg, Linda Kenley of Radford, Missie O'Dell of Seattle, Wash., Penny Lyons of Radford and Jane Reed of Nashville, Tenn. Smith is a member of the Montgomery County Moose Lodge, the Water Pollution Federation and the American Defense Preparation Association.

\ DAVID W. KIRKPATRICK has been certified as a professional engineer by the State Board of Registration for Professioanl Engineers of Virginia. He is an engineer in propellant development with Hercules. He graduated from the West Virginia Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering. Kirkpatrick has been with Hercules for almost five years.

\ WAYNE S. CATLETT of Blacksburg has completed 30 years of service with Hercules. He is the controller for Radford Army Ammunition Plant. During his career with Hercules, Catlett has held various management positions and travelled throughout the United States. He and his wife Miriam have three children: Paula A. Miller of Woodbury, Minn., Bev Cundiff of Roanoke and Tim Cundiff of Blacksburg. Catlett is a member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, the Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club and the Kazim Shrine Temple. He is also chairman of the Vistas Home Owners Association.

\ HAROLD C. MCMILLAN reached the 30-year mark at Radford Army Ammunition Plant. He works in the maintenance standby shop. McMillan and wife Lillian live in Galax and have two sons, Gary McMillan of Galax and Darrell McMillan of Winston-Salem, N.C. He is a member of the Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge.
