HOUSING PROJECT ATTACK INJURES FOURTH VICTIM

A Salem man was beaten by a group of men early Friday after he turned down an offer to buy some crack cocaine at a Northwest Roanoke housing project, police said.

The incident was the fourth serious assault within the past week in the area of Lincoln Terrace and adjacent Hunt Avenue.

Bryant Scott Kane, 23, told police he was attacked after his brother dropped him off on Downing Street in the project at 12:42 a.m. Friday.

Kane said a "large group" of men confronted him and asked if he wanted to buy some crack. When he declined, Kane told police, the men beat him and robbed him of about $148.

At least one of the men brandished a gun, Kane told police.

Kane's shirt was ripped off during the attack. He was not seriously injured, and declined treatment from paramedics who went to the scene.

Police responded to the incident after Kane waved down a passing patrol car on nearby Liberty Road.
