EARTH DAY EVENTS

Here is a list of Southwest Virginia events planned in conjunction with Earth Day '90:\ Roanoke Valley\ SATURDAY\ 12TH ANNUAL CLEAN VALLEY DAY: Individuals, groups and businesses volunteer to pick up litter and trash at a site of their choice from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; to register, call the the Clean Valley Council at 345-5523.

Also, area landfills will be open to residents for an extended permit. The Roanoke Regional Landfill will allow free landfill use by permit. Passes will be good only on Clean Valley Day from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and must be obtained in advance from the Clean Valley Council office by April 17. Call 345-5523.

The Botetourt County landfill will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and groups working on projects in the county may take materials to the landfill, identifying themselves as Clean Valley Day participants. The Salem landfill will also be open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for use by Salem residents only.

In Vinton, residents can participate in Clean Up Vinton contest; $150 prize for largest collection of litter. For information, call 983-0647. PAINTING IN THE PLAZA: The Plowshare Peace Center and Name Pending, a Roanoke artists' group, invite children and adults to help paint an Earth Day mural beginning at 2 p.m. at Century Plaza in Downtown Roanoke. Music and tree-planting information will also be featured.

\ APRIL 22\ MILL MOUNTAIN ZOO: Earth Day activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m; admission is free that day.

Visitors are encouraged to save energy by parking their cars at Victory Stadium and taking a free shuttle bus to the top of Mill Mountain. Parking on Mill Mountain will be limited to those with three or more in their car.

Newspapers, glass and cans will be collected for recycling. Displays and music will be featured.

Roanoke City Parks and Recreation will sponsor a walk up the mountain starting at 12:30 p.m.; register for the walk at the recreation building on Reserve Avenue by noon.

A rally is scheduled in Mill Mountain Park, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., including a birthday-cake cutting, speeches made by area representatives and a guest lecture by James Loesel, recipient of last year's Citizen's Environmental Award.

Environmental Carnival Games will be held in Mill Mountain Park from 1 to 5 p.m.

\ SCIENCE MUSEUM OF WESTERN VIRGINIA: Visitors bringing a recyclable item get 50 cents off admission and free white pine seedlings. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m.

Programs include a trash can analysis and recycling lecture at 1:30 p.m.; lectures on vanishing habitats at 2 and 4 p.m.; a talk by Hollins College physics professor Ken Jacobs on "How Humans Are Affecting Their Atmosphere: Ozone Hole and Greenhouse Effects" at 3 p.m.; and an awards presentation for Earth Day essay contest winners at 4:30 p.m.

\ APRIL 24\ ROANOKE RIVER SIERRA CLUB: An organizational meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Science Museum lecture hall. For more information, call 362-2917.

\ New River Valley\ MONDAY\ NEW RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Events include a how-to program on Organic Gardening, Rooker Hall, noon; "Camera Magic," a film on nature and wildlife, Rooker Hall, noon and 7:30 p.m.; "The Greenhouse Effect," an environmental film, Rooker Hall at 7:30 p.m.

SCULPTURE AND ART SHOW: Featuring environmental themes at the After Hours Nightclub on North Main Street, Blacksburg. Hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Thursday.

BICYCLE REPAIR WORKSHOP: Blacksburg Community Center, 6 p.m. A how-to seminar for roadside repairs. Cost is $7, and bring your bike.

ENVIRONMENTAL ART EXHIBITION: Virginia Tech's War Memorial mezzanine. Hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Thursday.

\ TUESDAY\ RAINFOREST INFORMATION SEMINAR: Pamplin Hall at Virginia Tech, 7 to 9 p.m.

RECYLING IN THE HOME: Seminar featuring a panel of recyclers and waste management experts; Pulaski County Library at 10 a.m.

\ WEDNESDAY\ WILDLIFE REHABILITATION: Program by Rose Norris of the New River Wildlife Center. Norris will bring several animals and birds. New River Community College, Rooker Hall, noon. Program will be followed by "The Impact of Technology on the Environment," at 1 p.m.

ENVIRONMENTAL SPEAKERS FORUM: Issues will include waste management, energy, endangered species and Virginia Tech's environmental practices. Area speakers between 1 and 5 p.m.; Outside experts between 7 and 9 p.m.; Continuing Education Center in Blacksburg.

\ THURSDAY\ EXXON VALDEZ OIL SPILL: Videotape, lecture and panel discussion, Rooker Hall, New River Community College, noon to 1:30 p.m.

FRIDAY\ RAIN FOREST BENEFIT CONCERT: South Main Cafe, Blacksburg, 9 p.m.

SATURDAY\ 7th ANNUAL BROOMIN' AND BLOOMIN' CLEAN-UP: Volunteers go litter-picking all across Montgomery County; participants are urged to recycle glass, paper, aluminum and other items, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Followed by a picnic and awards program at the Montgomery County Park. BLACKSBURG BICYCLE PARADE: Begins at Blacksburg Community Center at 2 p.m. and ends at the Tech Duck Pond. Bicyclists are asked to decorate their bikes in an environmental fashion. Parade followed by Earth Day Showcase at the drill field with information booths and recyclables collection from 3 to 6 p.m. Call Tom Clarke at 961-1133.

BISSETT PARK, RADFORD: Activities throughout the day starting at 10 a.m., including a public parade featuring costumes and floats, performances, children's activities, live music, speakers, food, art exhibits and a Community Candlelight Ceremony with a recitation of the Green Pledge.

FLOYD: Bicycle Parade from Main and Locust streets to Floyd County High School football field, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Followed by festivities with speakers, live bands, displays, children's activities, kite-making and kite-flying. At 2 p.m., falconer Christopher Harr will bring birds of prey for his presentation, and at 3 p.m., Floyd County's Green and Clean Caravan will arrive with trash collected from illegal dumps cleaned up earlier in the day.

GILES COUNTY CLEAN-UP: Participants get pine seedlings from the Virginia Dept. of Forestry. For more information call 921-2525. Recycling Collection from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dominion Bank on Wenonah Avenue in Pearisburg.

CLEAN PULASKI DAY '90: Volunteers will collect trash from areas in the county. To sign up, call Terri Gregory 980-8888.

NEW RIVER TRAIL STATE PARK: Clean-up and bridge decking, 9 a.m. Ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Peak Creek railroad trestle on Virginia 699 in Pulaski. Call 699-6778 for more information.

CLAYTOR LAKE STATE PARK: Earth Day Celebration at large shelter with music by Pulaski County resident John Viars, 6 to 8 p.m.

APRIL 22\ PEACEFEST/EARTH DAY: Virginia Tech's Henderson lawn off College Avenue, noon to dusk. Features local rock 'n' roll bands.

WILDFLOWER AND NATURAL HISTORY HIKE: Falls Ridge Nature Conservancy. Hikers should meet at Blacksburg Community Center, preregistration is $6. Call 961-1133 for more information.

\ Bedford area\ SATURDAY\ LITTER CLEAN-UP: City- and county-wide, from 9 a.m. to noon. Call Cindy Sherman at 586-7155 for more information. A new voluntary drop-off center for recyclable goods will open at the Forest Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

APRIL 22\ EARTH DAY RALLY Liberty Lake Park, 2 to 5 p.m. Event features talks on reforestation, comprehensive farming and the Adopt-a-Highway program; a bike parade; a tree-planting ceremony; live music; a skateboard contest; a puppet show; and kite-flying and bubble-blowing contests.

The Forestry Department is donating 2,000 tress for visitors to plant. Admission is one aluminum can, which will be recycled.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE STATE PARK: Recycling program presented by park staff, 3 to 5 p.m.

\ APRIL 23\ COMMUNITY RECYCLING SEMINAR Big Island Elementary School, 7 p.m.

\ APRIL 24\ HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTES: A community seminar at Moneta Rescue Squad building, 7 p.m.

\ APRIL 25\ WISE WATER USAGE: A community seminar at the Rescue Squad building in Montvale, 7 p.m.

\ APRIL 26\ ORGANIC GARDENING: A community seminar at the Forest Library, 7 p.m. Franklin County

\ SATURDAY\ BOONES MILL CLEAN-UP WEEK: Through April 29. Clubs and neighborhood groups will be cleaning up litter and planting trees. Call 334-5404 for more information.

\ Henry County\ APRIL 22\ VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY: Special presentations throughout the day, featuring a mime troupe and recycling information; call 632-1930 for more information.

\ Botetourt County\ SATURDAY\ CLEAN FINCASTLE DAY: A large trash collection vehicle will be parked in front of the town office at 3 E. Main St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to haul away litter and refuse picked up in Fincastle. Free trash bags for the event are available at the town office Wednesday-Friday; prizes will be awarded for the most bags of litter collected.

\ Rockbridge County\ FRIDAY\ EARTH DAY FAIR: Hopkins Green in Lexington, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring acoustic music and environmental literature and displays. Visitors are encouraged to bring a brown-bag lunch.

\ SATURDAY\ TRASH PICK-UP: Volunteers will clean segments of highways in the county.

\ APRIL 22\ EARTH DAY OPEN HOUSE: By U.S. Forest Service at Pedlar Ranger District office in Buena Vista, 1 to 4 p.m.
