FORMER TECH AD TO GET OREGON ST. POST

Oregon State is expected to hire Dutch Baughman as its athletic director within a few weeks, The (Portland) Oregonian reported. Baughman, 40, has served as the No. 2 man in the Oregon State athletic department since October when he was hired as senior associate athletic director.

The Corvallis school has been looking for an athletic director since Jan. 5, when Lynn Snyder was told his contract would not be renewed when it expired June 30.

A screening committee set up by university president John Byrne recommended Baughman as Snyder's replacement three weeks ago, The Oregonian reported, quoting unidentified sources within the athletic department.

Oregon State football coach Dave Kragthorpe, initially thought to be a contender for the director's job, said he took himself out of consideration in early February.

Baughman has been athletic director twice in his career, at Virginia Tech in 1988 and at Furman University in 1979-83. He was an associate commissioner of the Southwest Conference in 1983-87 and also worked at Northwestern University and Ohio State, his alma mater.
