ONE IN 4 U.S. CHILDREN IN POVERTY, STUDY SAYS

Five million American children under the age of 6 - almost one out of every four in the nation - recently have been in families living below the poverty line, according to a new national study.

This makes young children the poorest of any age group in American society, with 23 percent, more than double the percentage of adults, living in poverty, said the report by Columbia University's National Center for Children in Poverty.

The report, released for publication today, used U.S. Census Bureau figures and other criteria, mainly from 1987, the most recent year for which comprehensive data was said to be available. - Associated Press
