UVA GOLFERS WIN DUKE CLASSIC

Tee Burton of North Carolina won a sudden-death playoff over two Duke golfers Sunday, but Virginia ran away with the team title in the 17th annual Iron Duke Classic golf tournament.

Burton, Jason Widener and Chris Cain of Duke all finished the 54-hole event on the par-72, 7,001-yard Duke Golf Course at 1-under-par 215. Burton won the playoff with a par on the first sudden-death hole.

Widener's 67 Sunday was the tournament's lowest round.

Tim Dunlavey of Virginia finished fourth at 216, followed by three golfers at 217.

The Cavaliers captured the team title with an 872, seven shots better than East Tennessee State.

North Carolina State was third at 883, followed by defending champion Duke at 885.

Virginia Tech shot a 310 Sunday to finish 13th at 927. Tom Brittain shot a 77 to finish at 226. David Hagadorn had a 76, Steve Sowers a 77 and Kyle Kauffman shot 80.

Twenty-four teams competed in the three-day event.
