AUCTION LETS ARTISTS KEEP PART OF PRICE

READERS of Jeff DeBell's March 20 article ("Artists seek portion of auction proceeds") may be interested to learn that 55 artists from Roanoke, Blacksburg and elsewhere will have the option of keeping 40 percent of what their work sells for at Artstravaganza, an April 21 auction to raise scholarship funds for majors in Virginia Tech's Department of Art and Art History.

Information about this auction at Tech's Donaldson Brown Center for Continuing Education has been in circulation among area artists since before November. Corporate and individual table sponsorships, together with proceeds from a black-tie dinner, will fund the event itself.

In a departure from local practice, artists will retain a healthy portion of the auction proceeds. The remainder, through the artists' generosity, will establish a scholarship fund for future artists who study at Virginia Tech. Artstravaganza's steering committee has tried to set a tone of cooperation, and will continue to pay close attention to what area artists have to say about their involvement with charities.
