U.S. WON'T REJOIN UNESCO

The Bush administration has decided that the United States should not rejoin the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, officials said on Monday.

In a report to be issued today, the State Department asserts that the organization, known as UNESCO, wastes money, is poorly managed, and has not taken a firm stand in the defense of freedom of the press.

"The leverage we retain as a sought-after non-member in some instances is greater than we would wield simply by being 1 vote among 161 others," the study says.
