THOMPSON, JAMES H., SR.

James H. (Jimmy) Thompson, Sr., age 83, of Vinton, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 1990, in a local hospital after a courageous fight with cancer. He was a member of Vinton Baptist Church, a 50-year mason, member of Chamblissburg Lodge #179 A.F. & A.M. and former member and past master of Vinton Lodge #204 A.F. & A.M. He owned and operated Master Service Station & Garage in Vinton for over 40 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Viola Lawson Thompson; son, James H. Thompson, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Louise T. and Richard I. Carroll; five grandchildren, Sherry C. Fountain, Houston, Texas; Sarah C. Lumpkin, Birmingham, Ala.; John I. Carroll, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Laura L. Thompson and James Scott Thompson, both of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Grover A. Thompson, Roanoke; Samuel P. Thompson, New Orleans, La. Funeral services will be conducted from Vinton Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 20, with the Rev. William L. Ross and the Rev. Lewis E. Bates officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Vinton Baptist Church or the Vinton First Aid Crew. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.
