CHARGES MAY RESULT FROM FERRY INQUIRY

The captain and owner of the ferry on which 161 people died in a fire might face criminal charges arising from a marine inquiry, a senior police officer said Tuesday.

The inquiry into the April 7 fire aboard the Scandinavian Star adjourned until April 25, after seven days of hearings and 24 wtnesses.

"I can't exclude the possibility that the ship's captain and the shipowner could face criminal charges," Deputy Police Chief Svend Clausen told The Associated Press.

The Norwegian captain, Hugo Larsen, has admitted that he left the burning ship knowing that passengers remained on board.
