IVANHOE HEARING SET ON CLEANING UP TOXINS

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Waste Management will hold a public meeting on Tuesday to discuss cleanup work at the old National Carbide plant in Ivanhoe.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Ivanhoe Civic League building at Main Street and Churchill Road.

Since last July, the EPA has been overseeing the removal of transformers stored in a building at the site. The transformers were leaking polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, a cancer-causing industrial waste.

The agency now is testing soil and water on the site to determine if more work is needed.
