FMHA OPENS PROGRAM TO COMMUNITY PROJECTS

The Farmers Home Administration has extended its guaranteed loans program to community projects such as water and sewer systems, fire stations and health clinics.

In the past, all of FmHA's loans for community projects have been direct loans to the borrower.

Under the new program, the FmHA guarantees a loan made by a commercial lender against a certain percentage of loss. It continues a trend begun by the agency for farm loans in the mid-1980s. Since then, 50 percent of all FmHA farm loans have been guaranteed loans.

Nationally, the 1990 federal appropriations bill provides $74.5 million in guaranteed loans for water and waste disposal and $23.9 million for other community projects. - Staff report
