GARDENING PROGRAM TO AID LOW INCOME, ELDERLY

New River Community Action is sponsoring the Summer Gardening Project for qualified low-income and elderly community members in an effort to expand and supplement the food and nutrition supply available to these New River Valley residents.

For $2, qualified applicants can obtain $10 to $15 worth of seeds - corn, beans, peas, lettuce, beets, turnips, carrots, greens and cucumbers - to plant in their gardens.

Seeds are available in all areas and some assistance is available with garden design, rototilling. Volunteers also are on hand to help elderly or disabled gardeners.

The project is available on a limited, reservation system. If interested, call the area office for a formal intake appointment to see if you qualify. In Giles County call 921-2146; in Floyd County call 745-2102; in Pulaski County call 980-5525; and in Montgomery County and Radford call 382-6186. A Potluck Harvest Dinner will be held at the end of the growing season for participating gardeners.
