EX-CONGRESSMAN TO HEAD U.S. OFFICE

Former Rep. Robert Daniel, a Republican who represented Virginia's 4th Congressional District in the 1970s, has been tapped by Secretary of Energy James Watkins to head a new office of intelligence in the Energy Department.

Daniel, 54, was a Central Intelligence Agency officer between 1964 and 1968. He was elected to Congress in 1972 and served for a decade until he was defeated by Democrat Norman Sisisky of Petersburg.

During the Reagan administration, Daniel was deputy assistant secretary of defense for logistics from 1984 to 1986.

Watkins, in a statement released this week, said he was consolidating counterintelligence, foreign intelligence and threat assessment activities into one office.
