Joe Montana continued to reap rewards from the 1989 NFL season when he was voted Professional Athlete of the Year by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. The San Francisco 49ers' quarterback finished ahead of boxer James "Buster" Douglas and basketball star Michael Jordan.

An NCAA committee has certified the Sunshine Football Classic as the nation's 19th bowl game. It will be played Dec. 28 or 29 at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami.
