Defensively, the Bucs committed three errors and gave up five unearned runs. The offense got 13 hits but stranded 11 runners. As a result, the Bucs lost 9-6 to the Frederick Keys in a Carolina League baseball game at Municipal Field.
Salem completed a season-opening, seven-game homestand with a 5-2 record. The Bucs play the first of seven straight road games tonight at Kinston.
"I was pleased with the way we played during this homestand," said Stan Cliburn, Salem's manager. "We very well could have gone 7-0. As long as you score in games and have a chance to win, you've got to be happy."
The Bucs dug an early hole for themselves.
Three Frederick hits and two Buccaneers errors resulted in a four-run first inning for the Keys. Frederick scored single runs in the second and third innings and led 6-0, with three of the runs unearned.
Salem got four hits each from third baseman Bruce Schreiber and right fielder Domingo Merejo, but the Bucs' inability in the clutch ended rallies in the seventh and eighth innings.
Zachary Kerr (2-0) went 6 innings for Frederick to pick up the win.
\ BUCSHOTS: Merejo didn't play in the first four games, but he has eight hits and five RBI in the past three. Schreiber has been just as hot. He was 0-for-5 in the opener but is 13-of-24 since. . . . Designated hitter Tim Hines was 0-for-5 Wednesday, making Salem's designated hitters 2-for-25. . . . Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (1-0) is the scheduled starter for the Bucs against Kinston (3-3).
