FARM DRUG ENDORSED ON SOME COLON CANCER

A chemotherapy combination that includes a drug used to deworm farm animals was endorsed Wednesday by a panel of experts as a standard treatment after patients in a late stage of colon cancer undergo surgery.

Twelve cancer specialists assembled by the National Institutes of Health recommended all physicians offer the drug combination of 5-fluorouracil, or 5-FU, and levamisole to patients who have been surgically treated for stage III colon cancer.

Levamisole is a drug widely used to remove worms from the intestinal tract of cows, horses, goats, sheep and even elephants; 5-FU is a standard cancer drug that has been used for about 30 years. - Associated Press
