WEST QUITS AS CHIEF OF PREMIER

Joseph W. West has resigned as president and chief executive officer of Premier Bankshares Corp., based in Tazewell. Jack P. Chambers, a Tazewell lawyer, has been elected his successor.

West, the only president the bank holding company has had in its four years of organization, said he left "because of a difference in philosophy in operating the company." He would not elaborate when contacted on Wednesday.

West said he also plans to resign as president of Tazewell National Bank before the end of the year. He said he has not planned to take another job.

Premier, parent of Peoples Bank at Honaker, Tazewell National, the Bank of Speedwell and Richlands National Bank, said its first-quarter earnings were $1.18 million, down from $1.30 million. Its assets increased by $10 million to $339.8 million in the quarter.

The company's offer to buy the Bank of Shawsville is pending federal approval. - Staff report
