BALILES APPOINTEES REJECTED BY WILDER

Gov. Douglas Wilder has served walking papers on several more appointees named by his predecessor, former Gov. Gerald Baliles.

Among the Baliles picks rejected by Wilder are James C. Wheat Jr. of Richmond as a member of the Virginia Recreational Facilities Authority that oversees Explore, the proposed 1,700-acre "living history" state park just east of Roanoke.

Wheat had supported Republican Marshall Coleman over Wilder in last year's gubernatorial race.

Also bumped was Roanoker Douglas Cruickshanks Jr., who Baliles had named to the state Council of Higher Education.

Wilder went along with Baliles' choice of his former press secretary, Chris Bridge, to serve on the board of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. He also endorsed Darrel Martin, a top political aide to Baliles now working at Virginia Tech, for appointment to the Virginia Council on Child Day Care and Early Childhood Programs.

Wilder also endorsed the appointment of Beverly T. Fitzpatrick Jr. of Roanoke, who Baliles had named to the board of the Nonstock Corp.

But Wilder said no to Baliles' choice of William J. Bridge, Chris Bridge's husband, to the state Library Board.

Others getting the heave-ho were Sandra D. Bowen, who was Baliles' secretary of the commonwealth, and Andrew Fogarty, who was Baliles' chief of staff.

Bowen had been named by Baliles as a board member of the College of William and Mary, and Fogarty had been named as a member of the authority that directs the Center of Innovative Technology in Northern Virginia.

Wilder was given the opportunity to replace numerous people whom Baliles had appointed because the House of Delegates failed to meet a deadline for confirming the Baliles appointments during the General Assembly's regular session this year.

Previously, Wilder had used the opportunity to dismiss Stewart Gamage, who was an aide to both Baliles and former Gov. Charles Robb, as a member of the William and Mary board and to bump Norfolk Mayor Joseph Leafe from the Commonwealth Transportation Board.
