AEP CITES WEATHER IN EARNINGS DECLINE

An unseasonably mild winter depressed residential sales of both American Electric Power Co and its Appalachian Power Co. subsidiary in the first quarter, the utilities said.

Apco reported net earnings of $31.6 million, down 25 percent from $42.1 million. Its operating revenues rose 4.5 percent to $363.3 million.

AEP earnings were down 9.3 percent to $144.8 million, while operating revenues came to $1.3 billion, an increase of 2.8 percent. Higher revenues were the result of more sales to other utilities, said W.S. White Jr., AEP chairman. - Staff report
