FIRE DESTROYS CHARLOTTESVILLE APARTMENTS

An early morning fire caused extensive damage to an apartment building occupied mostly by University of Virginia students, authorities said.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries in the blaze that broke out around 12:45 a.m. in the basement of Varsity Park Apartments, said Charlottesville Police Lt. C.E. Jones.

The fire destroyed five apartments and the laundry room of the building.

Officials said the fire burned for three hours before it was contained.

No other injuries were reported and officers were checking to see if all the residents were accounted for this morning.

It was the second major fire in Charlottesville in as many days. On Tuesday, a suspicious fire at the Albemarle High School caused between $750,000 and $1 million worth of damage.

Both blazes were being investigated.
