MAN HELD IN THREATS ON BUSH

The 21-year-old son of a former Panamanian president was arrested after allegedly threatening to kill President Bush because of the Panama invasion, officials said.

Otto Lakas, a student at Lubbock Christian University, was being held in Lubbock County Jail today, Lubbock County Sheriff's Department Cpl. Rusty Brooks said. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon, the department said.

He had an initial appearance shortly after his arrest before U.S. Magistrate J.Q. Warnick and will appear before the magistrate again next week, Warnick's office said. No bail has been set.

He was held on a federal charge of threatening the life of the president, Warnick's office said.

Brooks confirmed Otto Lakas is a son of Demetrio Lakas, president of Panama from 1972 to 1978.

The Secret Service said the owner of a pawn shop reported that the man tried to buy a gun, saying he was unhappy about the U.S. invasion of Panama.

Officials say the defendant is a former Texas Tech student now enrolled at Lubbock Christian University.
