BUCHANAN PICKS PLANT CONTRACTOR

A Farmville company has tentatively been awarded a contract to upgrade the Buchanan sewage-treatment plant.

Boothe and Co.'s bid of $1,050,295 was the lowest received, Mayor Stull Carson told the town council at its monthly meeting April 9.

Buchanan has a $1,280,000 no-interest loan from the Virginia Resource Authority to upgrade the plant. Council has asked for a $700,000 community development block grant to help pay for the project.

Carson said in a recent meeting that he would ask for help obtaining the grant, but he didn't think state Sen. Dudley "Buzz" Emick, D-Fincastle, would help out. Since making that statement, Carson said he and Emick have resolved the matter.

"Buzz is committed to helping, and has always been willing to help Buchanan in any way he can. I feel that if the town is successful in its latest quest to obtain funding for the project, it can be attributed to his efforts," Carson said.

In other action, council:

Was told that many residents with unpaid water bills had their water cut off.

Went into executive session to discuss changing auditors for the town books. The town is paying $6,600 annually to have the books audited. Council agreed to shop around for a lower fee.

Heard a request from Larry Bishop of the James River High School Booster Club to purchase the bleachers on the town's old ballfield. The high school has a new field, but no bleachers. No action was taken on the request, although the recreation committee will meet and come to a conclusion shortly, Carson said.

Learned that there are still a couple of flood-damaged houses on Low Street that area residents would like torn down. "I've got the addresses of the owners, and will meet with the building inspector to take whatever steps are necessary to start the process in motion," Carson said.

Heard a police committee report on the arrival of the new police car. The car will be in service as soon as the police radio is installed.
